Redefining the Future of Higher Education: My Latest Q1 Elsevier Publication on Immersive Learning

I am incredibly proud to announce the publication of my latest peer-reviewed research in Social Sciences & Humanities Open—a top-tier, Q1-ranked journal published by the highly esteemed Elsevier. Achieving Q1 status places this journal among the most prestigious and rigorously peer-reviewed academic platforms in the world, representing the top 25% of all publications in its field.
Publishing on such a globally recognized platform reflects a commitment to delivering high-impact, transformative research. In this paper, titled "The Programmable Learning Space: Immersive Settings as Knowledge-Organising Systems," my co-authors and I tackle one of the most critical challenges facing modern universities today.
The Multi-Million Dollar Blind Spot in EdTech
Universities worldwide are investing heavily in immersive technologies—Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Spatial Computing. Yet, the conversation almost always stops at a very basic question: Does this make learning more engaging?
Treating these powerful technologies merely as entertaining upgrades or "glorified textbooks" is a massive strategic oversight. When we move a classroom into a virtual space, we are not just upgrading the delivery method. We are completely altering the infrastructure of how knowledge is produced, accessed, and validated.
Introducing a Groundbreaking Framework: The Programmable Learning Space (PLS)
In this Q1 publication, we propose a radical rethinking of immersive learning environments. We introduce the Programmable Learning Space (PLS), a framework that proves a virtual setting is not a neutral backdrop. It is an active, deliberate system comprising four intersecting layers:
The Spatial Layer: The architectural design of the virtual world dictates what a learner is exposed to. Where you can go determines what you can know.
The Interaction Layer: The coded boundaries of action. What you are permitted to touch and manipulate shapes your cognitive engagement.
The Epistemic (Knowledge) Layer: The underlying algorithm. Knowledge is no longer a static text to read; it is a live, causal system reacting to your decisions.
The Validation Layer: The embedded assessment. Evaluation shifts from a traditional end-of-semester exam to continuous, real-time tracking by the system.
Why This Matters for Institutional Leadership
For higher education administrators, strategic architects, and quality assurance leaders, this presents a profound paradigm shift. When the virtual environment defines what a student can see, do, and be tested on, the authority to decide "what counts as knowledge" shifts from the university professor directly into the hands of system designers and algorithms.
How do we audit a virtual curriculum? How do we ensure these underlying algorithms remain transparent, unbiased, and compliant with rigorous academic standards? This paper provides the foundational roadmap to navigate these urgent questions.
