Beyond Automation: Why Education Needs a Human-Centered AI Framework

Generative AI is completely reshaping the classroom, but as educators and technologists, we are often focused on the wrong things. We spend so much time worrying about what AI will automate—from grading rubrics to student essays—when the real opportunity lies in how it can augment human teaching and learning.

I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my latest research, which tackles this exact challenge.

In my new paper, "From automation to augmentation: a human-centered framework for responsible generative AI in education," I explore how we can shift the narrative away from technology replacing human effort, and toward technology enhancing human potential.

If we want to build a future where AI actually serves our students, we can't let the tools dictate the curriculum. We need a framework that deliberately puts human beings—both educators and learners—at the center of the equation.

What you’ll find in the paper:

  • The Automation vs. Augmentation Shift: Why viewing AI as a "co-pilot" rather than an "autopilot" is critical for preserving academic integrity and critical thinking.

  • A Human-Centered Framework: Actionable, ethical guidelines for integrating Generative AI into educational settings responsibly.

  • Safeguards for the Future: How institutions can protect student data, prevent algorithmic bias, and ensure equitable access to these powerful new tools.

Whether you are a teacher navigating AI in your classroom, an administrator writing new tech policies, or an ed-tech developer building the next generation of learning tools, this framework offers a roadmap for the ethical, effective integration of AI.

I invite you to read the full open-access paper and join the conversation about the future of learning.
